During pregnancy the baby is like a parasite and will take all the nutrients that he requires from you. If your diet is sufficient in nutrients for both, it does not cause any problems. If on the other hand your diet is insufficient for both, then your recovery and the ability to produce breast milk after the birth will take longer and if you still do not replenish your body stores during the confinement period, you may remain weak for a long time. If you are breast-feeding, you need to increase the amount slightly because you are eating for two. A nursing mother must continue to eat high quality food recommended during pregnancy in order to establish lactation and maintain an adequate supply of her breast milk. A deficient diet not only upset the nutrient content of her milk but can also reduce the quantity of milk produced. This is probably why our elders make such a lot of fuss about eating well during the confinement period. It is important that you eat nourishing food that includes all of the main food groups at every meal.

    Just remember the following pointers:

    1. If you are breast feeding whatever you eat will be transferred to your baby via your breast milk therefore it is important that you eat a balanced diet so that your baby will get the right nutrients for optimum growth and development.

    2. Some food does cause the baby to become ‘windy’ or have loose stools. If you find that your baby is suddenly quite unsettled, try to think of what you ate during the last 12 hours. Avoid that food for a few days and then try again. If the same happens again, then you should avoid that particular food for a while and re-introduce it into your diet by taking a very small amount and see how baby reacts then slowly increase the amount so that baby gets used to the food.

    3. You may find that your appetite is slightly low especially during the first week. This is normal as your body is readjusting to its non-pregnant state both physically and mentally therefore it is better to have small frequent meals instead of the normal 3 big meals a day.

    4. You need to drink plenty of fluids in order to make sufficient breast milk and it is best that you get this from sources such as soup or nourishing tea. Drinking too much plain water will dilute the breast milk and therefore is not nutritious for the baby.

    So what should you eat?

Protein – The building blocks are amino acids that contain oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen. Only eight amino acids are obtained from the food we eat. It is necessary for growth and repair of cells in the body. It helps make enzymes that enable us to digest food, produce antibodies and hormones. Too much protein in the body are converted into glucose and urea. Sources – Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, cereals (wheat, oats and rice), pulses (beans, lentils and peas), nuts and potatoes.

    Fat Soluble vitamins

Vitamin A – Retinol and Beta-carotene are necessary for cell division and growth. To maintain healthy mucous membranes of respiratory, digestive and urinary tracts and is important for good eyesight. Sources –

Retinol – Liver, oily fish, dairy produce and eggs.

Beta-carotene – Carrots, red peppers, mangoes, spinach and kale.

Vitamin D – Calciferols is needed to absorb calcium and phosphorous for healthy teeth and bones. It is also produced by exposing the skin to the sun. Sources – Eggs, tuna, salmon, sardines, fish liver oil and fortified margarines.

Vitamin E – Tocopherols prevent oxidation of free radicals polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes and other tissues. Sources – Vegetable oils, nuts, wheat germ, seeds and margarine.

Vitamin K – Phylloquinone is essential in forming certain proteins and for blood clotting. Sources – Green leafy vegetables especially green cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts

    Water Soluble vitamins

    Vitamin B

Thiamin (B1) is needed to obtain energy from carbohydrates, fats and alcohol and to prevent build-up of toxic waste substances. Sources – Pork, liver, heart, kidneys, nuts and pulses.

Riboflavin (B2) is necessary to release energy from food and for the functioning of vitamin B6 and niacin. Sources – Milk, yoghurt, eggs, meat, poultry, fish and fortified cereals

Pyridoxine (B6) helps to release energy from proteins and is also important for immune function, the nervous system and formation of red blood cells. Sources – Lean meat, poultry, eggs, fish, tofu, wholemeal bread, nuts, bananas, yeast extract and soya beans

Niacin produces energy in cells to form neurotransmitters. Maintain healthy skin and an efficient digestive system. Sources – Lean meat, poultry, pulses, potatoes, nuts and fortified cereals.

Pantothenic acid helps release energy from food and is essential for synthesis of cholesterol, fat and red blood cells. Sources – Meat, vegetables, liver, dried fruits and nuts.

Biotin is important in the synthesis of fat and cholesterol. Sources – Liver, peanut butter, egg yolk and yeast extract.

Folic acid is necessary for cell division and the formation of DNA, RNA and proteins in the body. Sources – Brussels sprouts, liver, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, pulses, wheatgerm, fortified breakfast cereals and bread.

Cyanocobalamin (B12) is necessary for making DNA, RNA and myelin. It helps transportation of folate into cells. Sources – Meat, poultry, fish, tofu, eggs and diary products.

Vitamin C or Ascorbic acid is necessary to make collagen and neurotransmitters like noradrenalin and serotonin. It is an antioxidant in the body and aids absorption of iron. Sources – Fruits, particularly citrus fruits, kiwis, strawberries, peppers, potatoes and vegetables.

Carbohydrates are converted into glucose and glycogen to give the body fuel for energy.

Glucose is in the blood and glycogen is stored in the liver and muscles. If the level of glucose drops, glycogen is converted into glucose for use. Sources – Sprouting grains, starchy root vegetables, fruits, cereals, pulses, milk and diary products.

    Fats

    • Saturated fats

    • Monounsaturated fats

    • Polyunsaturated fats

    • Cholesterol

Rich source of calories for energy and provide fat soluble vitamins. It maintains healthy skin and body functions. Necessary for the production of sex hormones, synthesis of vitamin D and production of cell membranes and nerve coatings. Sources – Butter, cheeses, fatty meat and all forms of cooking oil.

    Macrominerals

Potassium regulate heart beat and maintain blood pressure. Maintain fluid and electrolyte balance within cells. Sources – Avocado, fresh and dried fruits, banana, seeds and nuts, citrus fruits, potato and pulses.

Calcium is a vital component of bones and teeth. Vital for nerve transmission, blood clotting and muscle function. Sources – Green leafy vegetables, sesame seeds, tinned sardines, milk and dairy products.

Chloride is vital for stomach acid formation. Maintains fluid and electrolyte balance. Sources – Salt and any food containing salt.

Magnesium is important for muscle contraction and assists in nerve impulses. It is an important constituent of bones and teeth. Sources – Wholegrain cereals, green vegetables, nuts, sesame seeds and pulses

Sodium works with potassium to regulate fluid balance. It is essential for nerve and muscle function. Sources – Table salt, processed meats, yeast extracts and tinned anchovies

Phosphorous help to form and maintain healthy bones and teeth, help to release energy in cells and essential for absorption of many nutrients. Sources – Red meat, poultry, fish and seafood, milk and diary products, seeds and whole grains.

    Microminerals

Iron is essential for the production of haemoglobin which carries oxygen. It is needed for synthesis of RNA, DNA and collagen for healthy gums, teeth bones and cartilage. Sources – Liver, kidneys, red meat, sardines, egg yolk, green leafy vegetables, raisins, dried apricots

Zinc is essential for normal growth, reproduction and immunity. It aids the action of many enzymes. Sources – Oysters, animal proteins, beans, nuts, whole grains, pumpkin and sunflower seeds

Selenium protects cells against free radical damage. It is vital for normal sexual development. Sources – Meat and fish, butter, avocados, brazil nuts and lentils.

Water is vital for life. It is necessary for digestion and elimination of waste products. It acts as a lubricant for eyes and joints and regulates body temperature. Sources – Drinks, fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, bread and cereals, milk and dairy products.

    Food for thought

It is not only Asian communities that advocate lactating mothers refrain from eating fruits and vegetables, some Western communities do the same. In my opinion, the reason for avoiding fruits and vegetables is that some contain high levels of oxalate that interferes with calcium absorption. Lactating mothers require high calcium intake for adequate milk production.

Fruits high in oxalate – Kiwi, guava, star fruit, blueberries, figs and strawberries

Vegetables high in oxalates – Tapioca, pumpkin, sweet potato, carrot, garlic, watercress, brinjal, leeks, turnip, chives, lady’s fingers, parsley and spinach

Tip – Blanching the fruits and vegetables could lower the oxalate level.

Fruits low in oxalate – Papaya, langsat, banana, avocado, cherries, lemon, mango, watermelon, honeydew melon, ciku, durian and peeled apples.

Vegetables low in oxalates – Cauliflower, cabbage, kai lan, petola, green pea, capsicum, potato, tomato, cucumber, iceberg lettuce

Tip – If you love your fruits and vegetables and is worried about calcium absorption, then it is best that you have your milk drinks 3-4 hours before or after your main meals.

Avoid taking too much salt as this may reduce breast milk production. Cooling and windy food may contribute to baby becoming colicky. Acidic food may increase bleeding in the mother and diarrhea in the baby. What you eat also depends on what you believe in and who cooks for you. I hope that with the above information you will be able to tell your ‘cook’ what is best for both you and your baby.

    How I’m Fighting Breast Cancer

    By Sandy Powers

It was the summer of 2005 when my diagnostic mammogram revealed a growth in the back of my breast. The biopsy confirmed it was cancer. My best option was to have a mastectomy. The day before surgery, my surgeon called to tell me my pre-opt tests came back.

“Your liver enzymes are seriously elevated,” he said.

“What are liver enzymes?” I asked.

“Liver enzymes let us know how healthy the liver is,” he explained. “Your enzymes are 3 times higher than normal. Surgery is on hold until we run some tests.”

Had the cancer spread to my liver?

After a round of tests, the surgeon called again.

“The cancer doesn’t appear to have spread to your liver, but we can’t pin point the cause of the elevated enzymes.” He continued, “We can’t wait any longer for surgery.”

Three days later I had the mastectomy. The doctors decided I was not a good candidate for the traditional follow-up cancer treatment of radiation, chemotherapy, or hormonal (anti-estrogen) therapy. There is no cure for breast cancer; yet, the traditional therapies were not for me. My liver enzymes were still seriously elevated. I knew I had to find an alternative treatment. I went into research mode. I poured through hundreds of research studies, medical journals, and dozens of books. I shifted through my piles of notes. I devised My Six-Step Plan. I became my own guinea pig.

    My Six-Step Plan:

I stopped all multiple and mineral supplements.

Recent studies, for example, in The Journal of The American Medical Association and The Annuals of Internal Medicine concluded daily intake of beta carotene, Vitamin A, and Vitamin E in the form of vitamin pills increased risk of death; Vitamin A by 16 percent, Vitamin E by 4 percent and beta carotene by 7 percent. Researchers further suggested these and other artificial vitamins overload the liver.

    2. I switched to organic food and began using olive oil for all my cooking and

    baking.

Organic food eliminated from my diet the toxic pesticides, toxic fertilizers, added hormones, and antibiotics that are in conventional foods. Olive oil is healthy for the liver.

    3. I increased my food intake of Vitamin C.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects the inside of a cell from free radicals that can cause diseases like cancer. Vitamin C is the most important antioxidant of them all. According to the National Academy of Sciences, one out of every six adults receives less than one-half of the daily-recommended amount. Since our bodies can’t manufacture or store Vitamin C, I make sure I drink orange juice, eat tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, broccoli, and parsley every day. But I do not take Vitamin C supplements. According to researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, large doses of Vitamin C—like in supplements— also protect the cancer cells inside our cells. Vitamin C taken in food sources does not.

    4. I go out into the sun every day for 15 minutes for Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin. Science Daily reports studies show a clear association between a deficiency of Vitamin D and breast cancer. I have a daily ritual of fifteen minutes of sun a day without sunscreen.

I walk every day for exercise.

Since I live in Florida where heat can be a problem, I usually walk in Wal-Mart or Target. (I only take a couple of dollars along with me so I’m not tempted to buy anything!)

I meditate twenty minutes a day to reduce stress.

A little stress makes us productive. A lot of stress makes us sick. I want my body to concentrate on staying well, not on fighting stress. Meditation is a healer of the mind while Organic Food is a healer of the body.

After six months on this regimen, I returned to the doctor for a series of tests. My liver enzymes returned to normal and my overall cholesterol dropped forty points while my good cholesterol rose forty points. My cancer appeared in remission.

I remain on My Six-Step Plan to fight cancer recurrence. There is no cure for breast cancer. For me, the best I can do is beat cancer into remission and fight to keep it there. This year in the United States there will be approximately 243,000 new cases of breast cancer. Over 41,000 breast cancer patients will die. I don’t plan on being one of them.

A breast cancer survivor with liver problems, Sandy Powers turned to organic foods to heal her liver and fight cancer recurrence. Her healing recipes packed with antioxidants and immune boosters are in her book, “Organic for Health.” Visit Sandy and view her book video at www.organicforhealthsite.com

The human breast is a gland that contains milk ducts, lobes, fatty tissue, and a network of lymphatic vessels. Cancerous tumors can develop in virtually any part of the breast and are most often detected when a woman feels a lump. Cancerous lumps are generally firm, never go away, and are usually pain-free. The majority of breast lumps are not cancerous, but there is no exact way to tell without a professional’s examination. A lump that seems to be growing or that does not move when it is pushed may be cancerous. However, it may also be caused by normal fibrocystic changes during the menstrual cycle. A biopsy is necessary to identify the lump. Breast cancer can also cause a yellow, bloody, or clear discharge from the nipple.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and the second leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. The American Cancer society estimates that 267,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, and about 39,800 deaths occurred from this disease. The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer for American women is about one in nine. Many surveys suggest that it is the health problem that is most feared by women. However, if breast cancer is detected early, the five-year-and-beyond survival rate is at about 95 percent.

There is no single answer as to what causes breast cancer, and it is reported that about 60 percent of breast cancers develop without any known risk factors. Researchers believe that estrogen in the most likely culprit in many cases of breast cancer. Estrogen promotes cellular growth in the tissues of the breasts and reproductive organs, and cancer is a disorder of unrestrained cellular growth. Some of the risk factors for breast cancer include onset of menstruation before age nine, menopause after age fifty-five, having a first child after age forty, and having no or few children. The one thing that all of these risk factors have in common is that they result in the breasts being exposed to more estrogen for longer periods of time.

Men can also get breast cancer, but they account for less than 1 percent of breast cancer cases. While it occurs less frequently, breast cancer in men usually is diagnosed at a later, and therefore more serious stage because neither physicians or patients tend to suspect it. About 1,500 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the United States, with 400 dying from it. Cure rates are generally the same for men as they are for women.

It is crucial to detect breast cancer in its earliest and most curable stage. By making healthy changes in diet and lifestyle, examining your breasts regularly, and having regular mammograms can increase your chances of avoiding or overcoming breast cancer.

The following nutrients are helpful in preventing and dealing with breast cancer: coenzyme Q10, colostrum, DMG, essential fatty acids, garlic, germanium, melatonin, a multi-mineral complex, a multi-vitamin complex, natural beta-carotene, proteolytic enzymes, selenium, shark cartilage, SOD, vitamin B complex, vitamin C with bioflavonoids, vitamin E, maitake, vitamin D3, acidophilus, kelp, l-carnitine, l-cysteine, Pycnogenol, raw glandular complex, and SAMe. Additionally, the following herbs may be beneficial: astragalus root, Echinacea, bilberry, burdock root, ginger, green tea, peppermint, red clover, black cohosh, chasteberry, red clover, turmeric, dandelion root, milk thistle, chaste tree berry, ginseng, curcumin, rosemary extract, lycopene, sulphoraphane, green tea extract, garlic, ginkgo biloba, licorice, and silymarin.

Vitamin supplements can help support the bodys nutritional needs and in so doing help the body fight cancer. Changing ones diet, exercise and vitamin supplements can help one prevent the onset of breast cancer and extend ones life span. There are two new reports by cancer prevention specialists at Moores Cancer Center, Univsrsity of California, suggest that vitamin D in new prescriptions may prevent up to one half of all cases of breast cancer.

The study is published online in the current issue of The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. It pooled data from two earlier studies by the Harvard Nurses Health Study and the St. George’s Hospital Study that alleged that people with the highest levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 25(OH)D, had the lowest incidences of breast cancer.

The research was based on 1,760 cases of individuals in the two studies and divided them into five equal groups, from the lowest 25(OH)D at less than 13 nanograms per milliliter, to the highest group with 52 nanograms per milliliter.

”The data were very clear, showing that individuals in the group with the lowest blood levels had the highest rates of breast cancer, and the breast cancer rates dropped as the blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D increased,” said study co-author Cedric Garland, Dr.P.H. “The serum level associated with a 50 percent reduction in risk could be maintained by taking 2,000 international units of vitamin D3 daily plus, when the weather permits, spending 10 to 15 minutes a day in the sun.”

However, women are warned not to run out and start supplementing their diet. There may be other factors that were overlooked in these studies. While the reports are valid, and the research solid, they only represent 1,760 people out of the entire population.

”Meta-analysis is an important tool for revealing trends that may not be apparent in a single study,” said co-author Sharif B. Mohr, M.P.H. “Pooling of independent but similar studies increases precision, and therefore the confidence level of the findings.”

The authors recommend further research to study individuals for the effect of vitamin D from sunlight, diet and supplements on the risk of cancer.

The dose-response data on 1,448 people in the study were put into order by serum 25(OH)D level and then divided into five equal groups, from the lowest blood levels to the highest.

Co-author Edward D. Gorham, Ph.D said: “We project a two-thirds reduction in incidence with serum levels of 46ng/ml, which corresponds to a daily intake of 2,000 IU of vitamin D3. This would be best achieved with a combination of diet, supplements and 10 to 15 minutes per day in the sun.”

Vitamin D3 is available through diet, supplements and exposure to sunlight, or ultraviolet B (UVB) as long as the skin does not tan or burn. In a white woman, it will only take 10 minutes at noontime on a clear day, with 50 per cent skin exposure, to absorb adequate vitamin D. Darker skin will require up to 25 minutes.

It is important to eat a balanced diet. Vitamin D is linked to Calcium absorption, so overdosing on one will throw out the balance and may result in a depletion of one vitamin.

The reports continued and measured Vitamin D’s ability to prevent colorectal cancer and found similar results.

Chest enlargement is a surgical procedure to correct or change the size or shape of breasts. Adult Females who are looking this process have been warned and that this does not solve the issues, they could be occuring in their lives. Unrealistic anticipations in the bosom enhancement operation has made countless of women feel bad about the decision. What we could do is to increase on the hows to assist in how you imagine and feel about yourself.

Bosom enlargement, one of the most craved plastic surgery procedures. Females of all ages, sizes and walks of life have breast enhancement. For much women, the option is a question well enquired, for others it could be that it is utilized for recuperation after breast cancer. Whatever the reason is, it is still surgery. Surgery should always be taken earnestly, and must realize that before going through with the surgery.

But do not fret because cosmetic bosom enhancement is not the only means to grow your breasts. There are natural nonsurgical breast enlargement procedures like the Breast Actives(tm) system which does just that. It operates by causing your Estrogens to help you grow your chests just like in early teens, along with supplying you with the requisite nutrients to allow that physical breast development to happen quickly and naturally.

Other than the augmentation of breasts, recent lab research suggest that Pueraria Mirifica is likely to assist breast cancer prevention. A series of experiements regarding breast cell lines and the natural action of Pueraria Mirifica in vitro have been done by the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Phramongkutklao College of Medicine, Bangkok, Thailand. These lab researchhave expressed that Pueraria Mirifica root extract (Smith Naturals Co Ltd., Bangkok) has strong anti-estrogenic attributes oppossing aggressive cell cancer lines in vitro, specially the proliferative estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer lines (T47-D, MCF-7, and ZR-75-1) received from the MD Anderson Cancer Institute (Texas) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Pueraria mirifica encourages fibroblasts in normal breast cells and subdues estrogen- reliant breast cancer cells.

    Conclusion?

In my opinion boobs surgical operations are OBSOLETE!
